The Analytical Scientist / Power List / 2014 / Top 40 Under 40 / Michael Fogwill

Michael Fogwill

Senior Research Chemist, Waters Corporation, Milford, MA, USA.

  • Profile

Meet Michael Fogwill

Calling: “I have a passion for science, an innate drive to understand, and I enjoy creating and building things. Analytical instrumentation research allows me to pursue these passions in an environment with nearly limitless resources.”

Regret: “No. However, if my current path was made unavailable, I would likely end up in an academic research position.”

Emphasis: “I’m currently researching the interface of supercritical fluid chromatography to mass spectrometry.”

Triumph: “Excelling at a challenging and fulfilling career where I am pursuing my passions. I’ve established a broad intellectual property portfolio securing the groundwork for current and future products.”

Respect: “I look up to the talented industrial researchers who make significant advances in their fields but, due to the inherent and requisite confidentiality of industrial research, may not receive the recognition of their academic counterparts.
And I have a great deal of respect for the work of George Whitesides and group. Specifically, the simplification and cost-reduction of medical tests designed to increase access to diagnostics in developing regions around the globe.”

Hopes: “I will continue to learn and grow while working alongside the talented team of scientists at Waters. I will further establish myself as a scientific authority and mentor the next generation of scientists.”

Prediction: “The paradigm shift toward operator ease-of-use when developing future analytical instrumentation will, for example, move medical testing from the laboratory to the exam room.”

Advice: “Throughout your career, there will be failures – so embrace them, learn from your mistakes, and move forward. Remember to appreciate and enjoy the process and not to simply focus on the end result.”
