  • Profile

Meet Emily Hilder

Career highlight
Establishing ARC Training Centre for Portable Analytical Separation Technologies (ASTech) and the opportunities created for the students and researchers working at the center.

Advice to my younger self
Slow down a bit, and enjoy the journey. I’m naturally impatient but I think this is something I’ve got better with over time.

What makes a good leader?
Traits I associate with good leaders are an ability to really listen and learn from others (and admit when they are wrong), being able to make decisions and providing a supporting environment where others can feel safe to fail. Good leaders to me are able to bring out the best in others.

Nominator comment: “Emily Hilder is director of a major research institute with over 250 people focused on mostly new analytical technology that will drive ‘future industries.’ She is already recognized in Australia and beyond as a leader that others want to follow. She is the most inspiring mentor, not just to her own team, but to other young scientists all over the world.”
