The Analytical Scientist / Power List / 2017 / Mentors / Daniel W Armstrong

Daniel W. Armstrong

Robert A. Welch Distinguished Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Texas at Arlington, USA.

  • Profile

Meet Daniel W. Armstrong

Proudest moment
It can be gratifying when you publish something that few seem to know or care about, and then a few years later it becomes “all the rage” and has major scientific impact; for example, chiral separations, ionic liquids in separations and MS, and D-amino acids in biological systems. However, I can say with certainty that I am proudest when my former students and postdocs do well in their careers.

Best advice I ever got
I received two pieces of “wisdom” from my PhD advisor. First, if you publish fast enough, you don’t have to worry about competition. Second, there are a lot of very bright people in this “business,” but only a few will actually matter.

Nominator comment: “Professor Armstrong is an exceptional supervisor and scientist, who constantly goes the extra mile for his students.”
