Most successful collaboration
My most productive collaboration has been with Alon McCormick of the University of Minnesota’s Department of Chemical Engineering – without his collaboration and vast insight we would not have gotten very far in the development of porous zirconia as a substrate for HPLC. I would also acknowledge the contributions of and thank the truly outstanding students and associates who worked with me. These too were true collaborations.

Proudest achievement
Our studies of the basic thermodynamics and intermolecular interactions governing phase equilibria, which lie at the heart of separation science.

Best advice I ever got
To stay abreast of developments in a wide array of fields, not just what was going on in my own scientific backyard. This has led me to adopt and apply ideas from biochemists, physical organic chemists and, especially, chemical engineers to the goals of analytical chemistry.
